How to Become a Volunteer
STEP 1: Review the Volunteer Requirements
- All volunteers are asked to make a minimum six-month commitment to the shelter. If interested in a single-day volunteer opportunity, please click here to learn about our Community Service Volunteer program.
- Please note that most shelter volunteer positions require a minimum of two hours of service per week. Please check the volunteer position descriptions for age and time requirements.
- All volunteers 18 years of age and older are required to complete a national criminal background check and sex offender search.
- WELD CAMPUS: Please note: we ask for a minimum 6-month commitment. If you are a student and are only available on a seasonal basis, please email weldvolunteer@nocohumane.org. We will not be able to onboard student volunteers in the spring unless you are local to Greeley and can continue volunteering through the summer. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Volunteer Age Requirements:
- Volunteers between the ages of 10-15 are eligible to join our “Partner Up Program.” Partner-Up teams consist of at least one adult (parent, guardian or trusted family friend) age 18 years or over and the child. Adult and child volunteer together.
- Beginning at age 16, children may volunteer independently at the shelter in select departments without a parent or guardian.
- We’re sorry, but due to the nature of our services, children under 10 years of age are not allowed to volunteer at the animal shelter. Children may participate by providing foster care to an animal if an adult age 21 years or over joins the Foster Care program.
STEP 2: Sign Up For Onboarding
Prior to each volunteer orientation, we provide an overview of NOCO Humane’s programs and services, answer frequently asked questions about our shelter, review available volunteer opportunities, and provide animal handling training.
A $30 orientation fee for your t-shirt, name tag, whistle, training, and a national criminal background check will be required during orientation sign-up. This payment is non-refundable unless your start of service is denied by NOCO Humane due to the inability to place you. If you are registering as a Partner-Up team, the parent/guardian and child must both register.
Please note, all volunteer positions are not always recruiting. Our shelter does not have the space to have large amounts of volunteers in each department. If there is a department that you are set on, please email Volunteer Program Manager at volunteer@nocohumane.org to check on position availability.
Larimer Campus: Volunteer Orientations are held every month. Please click HERE to register for onboarding. New volunteers will receive their next steps upon registration and can complete those steps on their own time. After you submit all forms, you will be sent a link to sign-up for a specific orientation date. Space is limited, so please complete the form above to be informed when orientation registrations are opened. Questions? Please email larimervolunteer@nocohumane.org.
Weld Campus: Volunteer onboarding is entirely self-paced. New volunteers will receive their next steps upon registration and can complete those steps on their own time. Please click HERE to register to volunteer at Weld Campus. Questions? Please email weldvolunteer@nocohumane.org.
STEP 3: Onboarding
Larimer Campus:
- Complete volunteer paperwork – prospective volunteers will receive an email from our Volunteer Program Manager detailing all onboarding steps. All volunteers 18 years of age and older must complete a national criminal background check and sex offender search.
- Orientation – Attend an in-person orientation at our Larimer Campus where you will receive a tour of the shelter and animal-handling training.
- Interview – After attending one of our volunteer orientations, prospective volunteers will be invited to interview with one of our department supervisors to discuss personal goals, daily responsibilities, and whether or not the position is a proper fit for the volunteer, depending on availability and interests.
- Training – Each position has specific training requirements that will be reviewed with you at your departmental interview. Safety is our top priority, so we want to ensure that you are equipped to handle various situations in your position.
Weld Campus:
- Complete volunteer paperwork – prospective volunteers will receive a confirmation email upon registration which includes a link to all onboarding steps. All volunteers 18 years of age and older must complete a national criminal background check and sex offender search.
- Training – Upon completion of the required onboarding steps, the Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to schedule your first training day. Each position has specific training requirements that will be reviewed with you, in addition to the required animal-handling training. Safety is our top priority, so we want to ensure that you are equipped to handle various situations in your position.
