Thank you to Canine Candy Biscuits for guest writing this blog, as part of our business partnership program.

We are absolutely thrilled to be the Featured Business for NOCO Humane! As part of our “Rescue of the Season” program, we select a different Colorado rescue every season to support. A portion of every single bag of Canine Candy sold this past fall has gone directly to helping the animals at NOCO Humane find their forever homes.

But besides writing checks to great causes, we want to talk about what goes into our bags—and more importantly, why.

At Canine Candy Biscuits, we know that not all tummies are created equal. We’ve met plenty of pups who suffer from allergies, itchy skin, and sensitive stomachs. That is exactly why we are so picky about our process. If it’s in the biscuit, it has a job to do.

The “Barley Only” Rule

If you live in Northern Colorado, you know the beer scene is legendary. We partner with local favorites like Zwei Brewing in Fort Collins and Verboten Brewing in Loveland (plus some trusted home brewers) to rescue their spent grain.

But here is the catch: We don’t just take any grain.

Brewers use all sorts of ingredients—wheat, oats, rye, corn… sometimes a mix of all of them. If we just grabbed whatever was available on brew day, you’d never truly know what was in your dog’s treat. One batch could be fine, and the next could trigger an allergy. Yikes.

We stick strictly to Barley Spent Grain. By using only barley, we ensure that you are getting the exact same product every time you make a purchase. Consistency isn’t just about flavor; it’s about safety.

The Coconut Flour Difference

When it comes to binding our biscuits, we made a conscious choice to skip the standard white enriched and whole wheat flours. Since those can sometimes be triggers for dogs with sensitivities, we opted for Coconut Flour instead.

This swap keeps our recipes wheat-free, but the benefits don’t stop there. Coconut flour is packed with healthy fats (MCTs) that help support a shiny coat and healthy skin. It also contains lauric acid, which has natural antimicrobial properties that can support oral health—helping to keep those teeth clean and that doggy breath a little fresher!

Flavor with a Function: The Core 4

We don’t add ingredients just for the sake of it. Every flavor profile we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health. Here is the lineup of our “Core 4”:

  • Peanut Butter: Our crowd favorite isn’t just tasty; it’s packed with healthy fats and oils that support skin and coat health. (Plus, we haven’t met a dog yet who can resist it).
  • Banana Turmeric: This recipe is a powerhouse. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making this biscuit an excellent choice for supporting hip and joint health.
  • Blueberry Parfait: Packed with antioxidants, blueberries are a verified superfood for your dog, boosting their immune system while they snack.
  • Sweet Potato: The ultimate comfort food. This recipe is rich in fiber and easy to digest, designed specifically for the pups with EXTRA sensitive tummies.

In addition to our Core 4, we also release rotating seasonal flavors throughout the year! Be sure to follow us on social media and join our mailing list to get notified when new flavors drop.

The “Crumble” Factor

We coordinate with our brewers to pick up the spent grain fresh and wet right as they are mashing out. We don’t dry it out or grind it into flour.

By keeping the grain whole, we create a distinct texture that is uniquely Canine Candy. Our biscuits are formulated to crumble apart easily. This makes them perfect for every dog, from the tiniest puppy to the distinguished senior with no teeth left.

Community First (And Paws Always)

We believe in keeping it local and keeping it safe. By upcycling barley, we’re keeping good food out of the landfill. By partnering with NOCO Humane, we’re helping pets in need. And by staying strict with our ingredients, we’re making sure your dog feels as good as they taste.

We are so grateful to the NOCO Humane team for the incredible work they do every day. To the dogs currently waiting for a home: hang in there, your person is coming.
