Halloween is full of fun for people — costumes, candy, and community — but it can be a confusing or even stressful night for our pets. Between the doorbell ringing, kids in costumes, and tempting treats, there’s a lot happening that might not feel like a “treat” to your furry family members. To help you and your pets enjoy a safe and happy Halloween, NOCO Humane has put together a few simple tips to keep tails wagging and whiskers calm this Trick-or-Treat season.
Keep Candy Out of Reach: Chocolate, sugar-free candy (especially those containing xylitol), and other sweets can be toxic to pets. Remind your family and guests to keep all candy and wrappers safely out of paw’s reach. If your pet manages to sneak a few bites, contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic right away.
Create a Calm, Safe Space: The constant sound of the doorbell or knocks at the door can make pets anxious. Consider setting up a quiet room away from the front door with their favorite bed, toys, and some soothing music. This can help reduce stress and keep them from darting out when the door opens for Trick-or-Treaters.
Watch the Costumes: If you’re dressing up your pet for Halloween, make sure their costume is comfortable, breathable, and allows them to move freely. Avoid costumes with small, chewable pieces or anything that covers their eyes or restricts movement. Always supervise your pet while they’re wearing it — a quick costume photo is fun, but comfort and safety come first!
Prevent Door Dashes: Halloween night is one of the most common times for pets to accidentally slip out of the house. Double-check that your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date, and make sure doors and gates are securely closed throughout the night.
Decorate Carefully: Jack-o’-lanterns, candles, and electrical cords can all pose hazards to curious pets. Opt for battery-operated candles instead of real flames, and keep decorations safely out of reach from wagging tails and playful paws.
When in Doubt, Skip the Spook: If your pet gets stressed easily, it’s okay to skip the costumes and festivities altogether. A cozy night in with a movie and a few pet-friendly treats can be just as festive — and your furry friend will thank you for it.
From all of us at NOCO Humane, we wish you and your pets a safe, happy, and treat-filled Halloween. By taking a few precautions, you can make sure everyone — human and animal alike — enjoys the holiday safely.
