An anxious 2-year-old Pit Bull mix arrived at NOCO Humane in late April. Soon named Goober, this sweet dog would end up waiting very patiently over several months for a loving home.
Inside our shelter, Goober displayed many high-energy tendencies on a regular basis, such as bouncing off the walls of his kennel, tearing up his bedding supplies and injuring his tail from wagging it so much. He was provided behavioral modification medicine to help him be at ease in the shelter environment, and Veterinary Services determined that the very tip of his tail would need to be removed to prevent future injuries.
In early June, Goober was adopted, but sadly returned to us shortly after. Staff and volunteers noted that while Goober was often hyperactive in his kennel, he calmed down when outside. As such, he was sent to a foster family that could provide the consistent outside time Goober craved. The family reported that he was a true outdoorsman, loving hikes and exploring, and followed commands easily.

“Based on his shelter write-up, I was prepared for him to jump and rush to go outside for walks but he patiently waits while I put his harness on and when I ask him to wait at the open door (on leash) until I say “let’s go.” Never once jumped or was out-of-control to go out,” Goober’s foster family said.
After foster care, another family quickly expressed interest in Goober and he was adopted! Stories like Goober’s shine a light on the importance of foster families to NOCO Humane. Animals often behave differently in the shelter environment than in a home, and by having fosters available to help our animals, we can let furry friends like Goober show off their true personalities. Our foster care volunteers are amazing!
Success stories like this are only possible through your support. NOCO Humane is extremely grateful for all that our community in northern Colorado does to help ensure dogs like Goober and the other animals in our care receive the world-class support they deserve.

Goober and his new family!
