Larimer Humane Society to Provide Animal Welfare Services for Weld County
On June 6, 2023, the board of the Humane Society of Weld County announced that the organization will dissolve and transfer its assets, including the animal shelter located at 1620 42nd Street in Evans, CO, to Larimer Humane Society on October 2, 2023. As of that date, Larimer Humane Society will assume full responsibility for providing animal welfare services to Weld County.

Q: Why is Humane Society of Weld County closing?
The Humane Society of Weld County has faced various challenges in meeting the current demands and
has determined that it is unable to adequately address future needs due to the area’s continuous growth,
resulting in an increased pet population, declining revenues, and limitations posed by an aging facility.
Q: Are you expanding into Weld County?
Larimer Humane Society is developing a transition plan to ensure that Weld County
continues to receive essential animal welfare services from within their own community.
Q: Will there be a shelter in Weld County?
Yes! On October 2nd, Larimer Humane Society will take over operations of the existing shelter
at 1620 42nd St in Evans.
Q: Will your services be changing?
Current services provided by Larimer Humane Society will not be impacted by this expansion. We are
hiring and training 35 additional employees to support the expanded workload at the Weld County
shelter and to ensure Larimer Humane Society continues to deliver all services as usual.
Q: Who will provide Animal Control Services in Weld County?
The Weld County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Greeley, and the City of Evans have their own Animal
Control units. Larimer Humane Society is collaborating with these municipalities to ensure existing
animal sheltering contracts with the Humane Society of Weld County continue without interruption.
Q: What will happen to the city and county contracts that the Humane Society of
Weld County currently fulfills?
Larimer Humane Society is working with Weld County and its municipal leaders to ensure that animal
sheltering contracts are fulfilled, and that lost and stray animals will have safe shelter and care.
Q: What will happen to the animals at the Humane Society of Weld County?
Between now and October 2, Larimer Humane Society, with the support of our regional transfer partners,
will work to keep the animal population at a manageable level for the Humane Society of Weld County staff.
On October 2, the care for animals at the Evans shelter will officially transfer to Larimer Humane Society.
Q: Will you be keeping the name “Larimer Humane Society?”
We will be updating our name to better reflect our geographic scope of services.
Q: Will there be two Boards of Directors for the two shelter locations?
The Larimer Humane Society Board of Directors will provide oversight and governance for the
organization, ensuring the fulfillment of the mission and vision throughout all programs and
activities at both shelter locations. It is anticipated additional members will be added to
the Larimer Humane Society board to represent the expanded geographic scope of service.
Q: What services will be continued or discontinued in Weld County following the transition?
Larimer Humane Society will offer all services currently offered at the Humane Society of Weld County,
including sheltering, adoptions, lost & found services, pet microchipping, and more. As we learn from
the community and gain a better understanding of community needs, we anticipate services will be added.

We believe that the efficiency of one organization serving multiple communities throughout
Northern Colorado will create a greater impact and enable us to serve more animals and
people while maintaining quality standards through an expansion of animal welfare services.
